Avoid Setting off Fireworks on 4th of July 2023

EPIC-FSC, the Calabasas nonprofit on a mission to help all residents mitigate risks, survive an emergency event, and recover from fires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, is issuing a stern warning about the dangers of shooting off fireworks during the upcoming 4th of July festivities.

“Each year, the celebration of Independence Day brings joy and excitement, but it also poses significant risks when individuals attempt their own personal fireworks displays,” explains EPIC-FSC President Brian Cameron. “EPIC-FSC wants to emphasize the critical importance of avoiding lighting off fireworks in our neighborhoods to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire Calabasas community.”

Statistics from previous years indicate a concerning correlation between the use of personal fireworks and the incidence of fires. According to the LA County Fire Department which serves Calabasas, in the past five years alone, more than 60% of fire incidents reported during the 4th of July period were directly attributed to the use of fireworks. These fires not only endanger lives but also cause significant property damage, financial burden, and emotional distress for the affected individuals and families.

Calabasas is nestled amidst the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains, and its unique location brings a higher risk of wildfires. The dry climate and vegetation make the region vulnerable, turning personal fireworks into a significant threat. The potential for an errant spark or an uncontrolled firework to ignite surrounding brush and structures is too great to ignore.

Setting off fireworks in Calabasas neighborhoods is illegal for good reason, a misdemeanor charge punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment for up to six months. Professionally organized events, like the Calabasas 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular are allowed.

EPIC-FSC implores all residents of Calabasas to prioritize safety and opt for alternative ways to celebrate the 4th of July. There are numerous community events and professionally organized firework displays available throughout the region that adhere to strict safety standards and are overseen by experts in the field.

Furthermore, EPIC-FSC wants to highlight the adverse effects of fireworks on vulnerable populations. Veterans who have served our country with bravery and dedication may suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The loud explosions and sudden bursts of light from fireworks can trigger traumatic memories, causing extreme distress and anxiety.

Additionally, our beloved furry companions, dogs, are particularly sensitive to the noise and flashes associated with fireworks. The loud booms and bright lights can induce intense fear and panic in dogs, leading to erratic behavior, attempts to escape, and even injuries or death. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to the disturbances caused by fireworks. The sudden loud noises can startle and frighten babies, potentially disrupting their sleep patterns and causing significant distress.

By refraining from using fireworks, we can collectively mitigate the risk of fires and protect our community’s well-being. EPIC-FSC is dedicated to providing resources and information to help residents stay safe, prepare for emergencies, and recover effectively.
