Emergency Preparedness in Calabasas (EPIC) – Calabasas 2024 Organization of the Year

Got a little bit of time to make a big difference?

EPIC is an all-volunteer organization. If you’d like to learn more about emergency preparedness and help Calabasas become a safer community, please check out our volunteer opportunities and then complete the form below.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer recruitment and organization

Do you have managerial experience? Do you enjoy leading a team?

Assisting EPIC recruit volunteers will help our organization grow and continue providing valuable services to the community, such as FRS Radio distribution and training, Home Hardening evaluations, and the EPIC website and app. Recently, EPIC expanded its services, including the Firewise Community program, which assists residents with forming local Committees and providing software to simplify the required reporting.

Estimated time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

Social media campaign

Do you love spending time on social media?

Do you have any experience running a social media campaign?

Can you set up accounts and post content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and NextDoor? Are you a member of any local Calabasas groups on these platforms?

EPIC is looking for volunteers who can help us get our message to all our residents, regardless of the generation they represent. Devising an effective campaign is key to its success. Are you up for the challenge?

Estimated time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

Administrative – office

Organization is key to success. The behind-the-scenes efforts are just as important as the tasks they tackle. If you have strong organizational skills and attention to detail, this volunteer role is for you. It can be accomplished at home or office using a computer and phone.

Estimated time commitment is 1-2 hours per week.

Grant applications and report management

EPIC is a volunteer organization that relies on grant funds to operate.

If you enjoy research and writing, the thrill of finding a new funding source, and the exhilaration of landing the grant, then this is a volunteer role for you!

If you have grant writing experience, or have strong writing skills, or a legal background, EPIC could use your help.

Estimated time commitment varies; 1-2 hours per week over a period of months.

Ham radio communications

If you’ve got a ham radio license, we need you as Duty Officers. As a member of ECHO’s Radio Communications team, Duty Officers in each Calabasas evacuation zone will be a vital link to FRS radio users in those localities and the dissemination of vetted emergency information coming directly from the Calabasas Emergency Operations Center. EPIC/ECHO will provide training, including practice drills.

Estimated time commitment is a once a month Zoom meeting, using the EPIC account.

The duration of an emergency event is unpredictable. A commitment of several hours of transmission monitoring coverage is likely.

Home Hardening evaluation training

Do you like being outdoors? Do you enjoy meeting new people? You’ll visit residents at their local homes to provide a Home Hardening evaluation as an EPIC volunteer. You’ll receive training. It’s a common sense approach and the basic idea is “don’t lead fire to your home”. We provide a written report that makes recommendations the resident can take to harden their home against fire risk. You can choose from a listing of residents who have requested an evaluation and can receive a stipend of $50 for each evaluation completed.

Estimated time commitment is 30 minutes to complete an evaluation.

Neighborhood Networks

Are you a “people person”? EPIC’s Neighborhood Networks can put you in touch with a network of your neighbors with FRS radios. You can practice talking over the radios. You’ll learn which of your neighbors you can reach in an emergency.

Estimated time commitment is a once a month Zoom meeting, using the EPIC account.

If you’ve got more time, we’re looking for Neighborhood Team Leaders to organize the local networks.

Estimated time commitment is an hour per week in addition to the monthly Zoom meeting you’ll chair.

EPIC emergency preparedness events

EPIC hosts booths with display tables at several emergency preparedness events a year. Some are indoors. Others are outdoors under a canopy. As an EPIC volunteer, you’ll staff our booth and talk with visitors about everything EPIC has to offer our residents to become better prepared in emergencies. If you’re a people person who enjoys meeting others, this is the role for you.

Estimated time commitment is 1-2 hours per event, but you’re welcome to stay longer!
