Wildfire Mitigation Tools: Things to Do Now

In an ongoing effort to enhance wildfire emergency preparedness and safety in our community, Emergency Preparedness in Calabasas, a Fire Safe Council (EPIC-FSC) is urging all residents to stay informed and connected through essential emergency notification services. With wildfire season upon us, being well-prepared and informed is crucial to protect our loved ones and property.

In the face of uncertainty, preparedness is our greatest asset,”

explains Brian Cameron, President of EPIC-FSC. “By taking simple yet crucial steps to stay informed and ready, we empower ourselves to protect what matters most—our families, homes, and neighbors. EPIC is here to support every resident on their journey to preparedness, and together, we can face any challenge that comes our way.”

EPIC-FSC recommends Calabasas residents do the following immediately:

  • Schedule a Home Hardening Assessment: Schedule a home hardening assessment with EPIC-FSC as soon as possible to fortify your property against wildfires and other potential hazards. After learning how to harden homes from Cal Fire experts, members volunteer their time and share their knowledge to help neighbors increase the likelihood of survival and property protection from wildfire. During the free assessments, a certified expert from the non-profit will meet with local residents, sharing insight and suggestions to help protect against the threat of flying embers, direct flame contact, and radiant heat exposure. EPIC-FSC’s mission is to harden all 8,400 homes in Calabasas, prioritizing and protecting human life, existing structures, and the unique habitat of the community. Don’t wait until it’s too late to safeguard your home, loved ones and community.
  • Ready LA County: This system is utilized by the County Sheriff to promptly notify residents and businesses about emergencies or critical situations. It provides crucial information about necessary actions, such as evacuations. While it has the capability to reach landlines, it is imperative to register your mobile numbers, VOIP landlines, and email addresses to receive notifications on those devices.
  • Nixle: Nixle is employed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff and Fire departments to disseminate emergency notices and alerts.
  • Sign Up for Calabasas Email Notifications: The Blackboard Connect system is employed by the City of Calabasas to provide residents with Calabasas-specific information during emergencies. It also offers notifications about road and freeway closures, as well as other pertinent community updates. Similar to Alert LA, this system can reach landlines, but registering your mobile numbers, VOIP landlines, and email addresses is essential to receive notifications on those devices.

Calabasas residents can find other valuable Resources on this website including a Wildfire Evacuation Checklist, tutorials in How to Turn Off Your Gas and How To Turn Off Your Water, plus Emergency Services Contact Numbers along with other vital information, all offered in an easy to downloadable format.
