The volunteers at EPIC-FSC (Emergency Preparedness in Calabasas), in partnership with the City of Calabasas are urging all Calabasas residents to get ready for the winds.
Santa Ana Wind Season is Almost Here—Let’s Get Prepared

Late summer and early fall bring the warm, dry Santa Ana winds and Red Flag Warnings to our area—with gusts exceeding 25 miles per hour creating conditions that can quickly escalate wildfire danger. Now is the time to make sure your home, yard, and family are ready.
Here’s your quick Wind-Ready Prep Checklist:
- Secure or store patio furniture, umbrellas, and lightweight décor that could blow away.
- Trim trees and shrubs near roofs, gutters, and fences to reduce fuel.
- Double-check that your go-bags are packed and placed where you can grab them fast.
- Keep vehicles fueled and parked facing out in case of evacuation.
Fire-Resilient Landscaping Focus
Adding the right plants now can make your property safer and more beautiful. Consider coast live oaks, California lilac, or toyon—all fire-resistant and drought-tolerant. Planting these native species not only reduces water use but also increases privacy and habitat for pollinators and birds. Tip: Native plants are available at local nurseries, and many offer fall planting events—perfect timing for root establishment before next summer.
EPIC-FSC Radio Reminder
Radios are a crucial link in our neighborhood emergency communication plan. Don’t wait until an emergency to reach out. If you don’t have one yet, please request it through our Contact Form. Once we receive your request, we’ll send you an email inviting you to our next distribution event.
Neighbor Check: Let’s Look Out for Each Other
When winds are in the forecast, it’s a good reminder to take a few minutes and check in with your neighbors—especially seniors or those with mobility issues. A quick “Are you ready?” conversation can make all the difference in an emergency.
We’ve created an Emergency Contact Card you can fill out and exchange with neighbors so you each have an easy way to connect. Download it now!
Quick Prep Tip of the Month
Keep a headlamp in your go-bag. It’s hands-free, lightweight, and invaluable if you need to navigate in the dark during a power outage.
