Fire Prevention Week is 365 days long

October 5th through 11th, 2025, is National Fire Prevention Week, and it’s the perfect time to take practical steps that reduce wildfire risk at home. EPIC-FSC, in partnership with the City of Calabasas, is here to help you take simple actions right now to make your home easier to defend and more fire-resistant.

Those of us who live in Calabasas know fire season is year-round, so think of this week as a starting line, not a finish line. In our city, if all fires happened only one week of the year, that would be “highly unlikely.” Fire Prevention Week is a reminder of these local “facts,” and we suggest that you prepare for the other 51 weeks of the year.

Wildfire Readiness Starts at Home

EPIC-FSC’s mission is to help harden all 8,400 homes in Calabasas, prioritizing and protecting human life, existing structures, and the community’s unique habitat. Wildfires don’t wait—and neither should you. Calabasas homeowners can reduce risk by:

  • Removing all combustible materials within 30 feet of the home
  • Using or installing fire-resistant materials around your home
  • Clearing debris from roofs, decks, windows, and gutters
  • Installing 1/8 inch metal wire mesh over vents and openings
  • Inspecting for dry rot, gaps, or cracks—and caulking any gap larger than 1/16 inch
  • Creating and maintaining at least 100 feet of defensible space (as your property allows)
  • Cutting or mowing annual grasses to four inches or less

For more detailed, personalized guidance, our EPIC-FSC volunteers will:

  • Explain how embers spread—and the small changes that make a big difference.
  • Walk the exterior of your home and make recommendations of potential concerns to improve the fire safety of your roof, vents, eaves, windows, and decks.
  • Assess landscaping and defensible space zones.
