Take Proactive Measures NOW to Protect Your Home Against Disasters

As 2024 approaches, residents of Calabasas are encouraged to make an important New Year’s resolution—to prepare their homes and family for emergency events. EPIC-FSC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, offers homeowners free Home Hardening assessment to protect their property against the threat of wildfires and other natural disasters.

“Amidst uncertainty, readiness becomes our most valuable resource,” states Brian Cameron, President of EPIC-FSC. “Through straightforward yet essential actions like home hardening, we equip ourselves to safeguard what holds the utmost importance—our families, homes, and neighbors. EPIC stands by every resident, offering support in their preparedness endeavors. Together, we can confront any challenge that crosses our path.”

Home hardening and defensible space design are recommended by Cal Fire and insurance companies as essential measures to safeguard homes from fires and limit the spread of wildfires in communities.

EPIC-FSC, in collaboration with experts from Cal Fire and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains, aims to educate Calabasas residents on the importance of home hardening through its free property assessment inspections.

The task may seem daunting but starting with some simple steps like clearing out dead leaves and plant debris from under bushes, shrubs and trees and out of roof gutters is an inexpensive way to make a big difference.

Key elements of home hardening include:

  1. Defensible Space Design: Clearing vegetation, maintaining a safe distance between trees and structures, and strategically placing fire-resistant plants reduces the likelihood of a wildfire spreading to your home or other structures on your property.
  2. Exterior Vents and Openings: Using ember-resistant 1/8th inch mesh in vents and other openings helps prevent embers from entering the home, reducing the risk of internal fires.
  3. Ember-Resistant Features: Incorporating ember-resistant features, such as mesh screens on vents and spark arresters on chimneys, further enhances a home’s ability to withstand ember showers during a wildfire.
  4. Roof Upgrades: EPIC-FSC recommends the use of fire-resistant roofing materials to minimize the risk of embers igniting the roof. Additionally, removing debris from roofs and gutters is essential to prevent potential fire hazards.
  5. Hardening Windows and Doors: Installing dual-paned windows and using fire-resistant materials for doors can help minimize the risk of embers entering the home and reduce the vulnerability of these entry points.

Originally established in response to wildfires, EPIC-FSC has expanded its mission to include earthquakes and other natural disasters. The organization’s strategy focuses on engaging residents through valuable programs designed to prepare all 8,400 homes in Calabasas for emergencies.

The goal is to empower residents to take proactive steps in fortifying their homes and contributing to the overall resilience of the community. EPIC-FSC’s Home Hardening assessments are conducted by trained volunteers who provide homeowners with recommendations and guidance on implementing these measures.

It will be a New Year soon but we’re all faced with the same “old dilemma” – wildfires are inevitable. However, your home burning is not. You can take action now to create a safer place for your family and home in 2024.
