The Wildlife Learning Center

When it comes to protecting your home from wildfire, seeing practical solutions firsthand can make all the difference. The Wildfire Learning Center, located at the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) Malibu Forestry Unit at 942 N. Las Virgenes Road, offers Calabasas residents a firsthand look at wildfire-resistant building materials, fire-conscious landscaping, and other protective measures. Plus, you can take home free plants to help make your property more wildfire-resistant!

Protective features such as Class A roofing, non-combustible siding, double-paned windows, and metal gutters are highlighted.

Landscaping demonstrations show how vegetation and other materials around a home can affect wildfire exposure, including the importance of the first five feet (Zone 0).

Free Plants, Landscaping Guidance, and Educational Programs

The Wildfire Learning Center offers residents resources to help protect their properties and learn more about wildfire preparedness:

  • Educational programs: Ask about programs for schools and community organizations on wildfire preparedness, conservation, and urban forestry.
  • Native plants: Ask about available plants and pickup hours.
  • Landscape guidance: Ask about professional consultations on tree care, erosion control, plant health, and fire-conscious landscaping.
