As California begins to recover from the first natural disaster of 2023, a group of local Calabasas residents is doing something to prevent future destruction in their community. In response to the damaging November 2018 Woolsey Fire, a group of residents came together to offer free home hardening assessments designed to mitigate risks, survive an emergency event, and recover from fires, earthquakes, and other natural disaster.

California will become the first state in the nation to require insurance premium discounts for owners of homes and businesses that are made safer from wildfires. The new rules mandate that insurance companies reward consumers who take wildfire safety and mitigation actions under the state’s Safer From Wildfires framework, the Department of Insurance.
Using the Zonehaven AWARE platform, first responders and residents will refer to the same set of Zone maps used for planning and conducting evacuations,” the city of Calabasas said in a news release. “Beginning with the Santa Monica Mountain region, residents can now see their ‘Zone’ and have access to information about emergency services in their zone, see real-time zone status updates, shelter options, and more.”
